Start your path toward becoming
a certified residential appraiser.
Beginning or advancing a career in real property appraisal often comes with questions about membership, education requirements, supervision, professional designations, and the overall path toward becoming a designated appraiser. The information below is intended to help guide applicants and members through the most common questions we receive.

Candidate Members are given up to four (4) years to attain the DAR designation. This includes the mandatory two (2) years of supervised work experience alongside a Supervisor.
Be actively working with your DAR designation for at least 2 years and successfully complete the CNA310 Certified Appraisal Reviewer course.
Yes! Once the USPAP course is complete, a Certified Appraisal Reviewer Supervisor is secured, and Errors & Omissions Insurance is obtained, you can work while completing the Candidate Training Program. Please note: Your Reviewer must sign your report when you are a Candidate member. See: Candidate & Candidate Non-Fee Training Program.
Previous real estate industry experience does not reduce the required DAR courses. Appraisal-related courses from other institutions may be considered for credit toward CNAREA’s mandatory or core courses, and other real estate-related courses may be reviewed for possible elective credit. Applicants must still complete any remaining required courses and the two-year supervised work experience requirement before writing the DAR exam.
Your Supervisor must be a CNAREA member who holds the Certified Appraisal Reviewer designation. To find one, use the Find an Appraiser search tool and also check the Job Board, then contact Certified Appraisal Reviewers in your area to ask whether they are accepting Candidates. Please note: CNAREA does not get involved in the business operations of our members and as such will not get involved in the hiring of new candidates.
All of our courses are offered online in both self-paced learning and Workshop learning formats.
