Designation Definitions

You will need to know which membership designation you are applying for. You will be applying for one of the following:

Candidate Member (CM) – must have a supervisor (a CNAREA Reviewer) lined up already;

Candidate Member Non-Fee (CM Non-Fee) – must be willing to obtain a supervisor to advance to the DAR designation. **Not accepting Non-Fee applications until further notice.**;

Associate Member (AM) – have the intent to register for a minimal amount of courses, for information purposes (working for AMC/banks), not to advance to the DAR designation;

Designated Appraiser Residential (DAR) – must have had DAR designation previously, or equivalent designation with another association.

We do not offer 1 course for someone to become an appraiser. We are not a school or a program you graduate from. CNAREA is a not for profit Association. The courses we offer are for our members who are real estate appraisers. We offer current and practical training/information for our members so they can be the best at what they do. If you have no experience and no appraisal designations, you will start as a Candidate member (CM) and are required to complete all our training (courses) as well as training with your supervisor (field experience) before you will advance to a Designated Appraiser Residential (DAR). This process will take a minimum of 2 years and could take up to 4 years to complete.

CM & CM Non-Fee members

You are responsible for researching and contacting members of CNAREA, who hold the Certified Appraisal Reviewer designation, to inquire about being their Candidate. For your convenience, please use our Search Tool to search members in and around your area. A supervisor must be a member of CNAREA and hold the Certified Appraisal Reviewer Designation. You may also check our Job Board for potential job openings.

**Not accepting Non-Fee applications until further notice.** Candidate Non – Fee members are expected to obtain a Supervisor in the duration of you being a member. All CM Non – Fee members are expected to advance to a Candidate member and ultimately to a Designated Appraiser Residential (DAR). You cannot progress to the DAR designation until you have two years experience (full time) writing reports as a Candidate with a Supervisor, and have the required courses completed.

All Applicants

All applications for membership are submitted here; New Membership Application, which goes to the Membership and Admissions Committee. Each application is reviewed with regard to education and experience. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age, hold a high school diploma, and not have a criminal record (these documents are required to be submitted with your online application). We appreciate your patience during this process.

Once you have been contacted regarding approval of your application, you will be invoiced for the membership fee, see New Member Fee Guide. The invoice will be due within 30 days of it being issued. If not paid by the 30th day, it will be cancelled and you will be required to reapply, if you’re still interested in being a member. The membership fee is renewed annually, no later than May 31st. Once your invoice is paid, log in credentials will be created for you to access our website portal where you will be able to order courses and renew membership fees when they become due. You cannot gain access to our courses if you are not a member.

All new members must complete course CNA102 Introduction to Appraisal Standards within 30 days of becoming a member.  Once you complete this online course (which includes 3 quizzes and a final exam) within the 30 days, and pass with no less than 80%, you will be mailed a Welcome Package which includes your membership certificate. After passing CNA102,  you will be able to proceed with completing the next courses. A full list of courses that are required to be completed within specific time lines can be found here: Education Requirements for DAR.

After passing CNA102, we will make a request to our insurance provider, who will email you with a link to apply for and purchase insurance coverage. All CM’s and DAR’s require insurance coverage.
